A comprehensive study of the state Lottery suggests that allowing virtual horse racing and slot machines would boost revenues.
The goal of the study commissioned by the state treasurer's office was to find a way to maintain interest in the Lottery. There's been stiff competition from casinos in neighboring states and online gambling.
According to the report, the biggest Lottery revenue gain would come from the installation of slot machines at four Massachusetts race tracks.
The Keno-style horse racing game would boost total Keno sales by nearly 22 percent.
The report also says the state could explore televised bingo, but should first make sure it doesn't have an effect on charitable bingo played in church, synagogue and V-F-W halls.
The study was done by Christiansen Capital Advisers, an independent gaming industry consultant.
